Chick Sick?

Chi
Hello everyone,

My little sister's chick, a 3 day old Barred Rock named Dozy, is acting kind of strange. Every few minutes it stands like it is about to poop, with the breast up and wings out, and starts peeping in a really distressed way, like it is in pain. No poop comes out. What is wrong with little Dozy? Otherwise, she acts mostly normal, besides sleeping a whole lot (hence the name) and just being slightly less active then the other chicks, a Silver Polish, Black Sex-link, and Black Australorp. They are all the same age. Do you think that the chick is dehydrated maybe? Or could it be coccidiosis? I am concerned that she cannot poop, except for a very small amount of foamy liquid. I have cleaned her vent several times because of her seeming inability to go to the bathroom.
My sister would be crushed if her little 4-H chick died. We all would. She has the sweetest personality. I honestly have no idea what is wrong and what else I should do.
Please help!

Thanks a bunch in advance because I know that you guys are smart and helpful cookies;)

chickenchick, how is your sisters little girl doing? Please update us.

Help!
Poor Dozy's condition is much deteriorated. Her vent is swollen and red and her poo is pale yellow and extremely sticky. I have cleaned it a few times but it just gunks up again. She is much more lethargic and she hardly opens her eyes. I think that she might be dying. Is there anything that I can do? I made her drink water and a little bit of mushy feed. Right now she is resting against a small board that serves as a roost in their box. She seems unable to stand.
I have to go but please help me. I don't what we will do without sweet little Dozy.

Did you follow any of the recommended courses of action? I'm not an expert but I know acting immediately is crucial. As far as things have progressed if you can get a Vet involved do so.

We don't have a good vet nearby. I think that I did everything that I could, but in the end it wasn't enough.
Little Dozy just died.

She fought a long, hard battle, but I think in the end she just had something wrong inside. She didn't grow at all and her vent remained swollen until we found her trying to die, so my mom put her out of her misery. She is in a much better place now with no mysterious constipation to plague her. There was a huge group hug to comfort my poor sister, she is very sad. We will be getting a replacement chick tomorrow after dance class.

Thanks so much to everyone who got on and gave advice. It was much appreciated. I was so glad to know that you guys were there to help and that you did help all that you could.

Tragedy is sometimes a part of life. Condolences. Advice is ever only a few clicks away. We'll be here chickenchick. It is the time of year for babies so I know you'll find the right one to replace your loss.

Thanks for all of the empathy and sympathy, everyone. I really am so glad that you all came to help.

chickenchick I elvish one of us could have helped poor dozy, I feel terrible for your sister, but like oysters have said ... it is a part of life. Chicks are fragile the first few days of life and that is a fact. On the flip side of things you are wonderful to take care of your sister and care for her, you have a great heart. If you can get more then 1 as they do much better in groups. Please keep us updated on your chicks, the one you have now and the new ones. Rest in peace Dozy, you truly gave it all you had and hung in very long. I guess that is also a testimony to how well you both cared for her, usually chicks get sick and are gone the next morning especially the babies like Dozy. The fact that she lived as long as she did proves that you really did all you could and even though she passed, you can be certain of that. Good luck

Thanks again everyone for all the comfort. Little Dozy really was a hard fighter. I think that something was messed up with her innards. Her vent was swollen and red like something inside just wasn't right. And she hadn't grown at all. Thanks so much to all those helpful folks who jumped on the thread to offer their help. I am truly sorry that Dozy didn't make it but I will make sure that I post on the new chick. It will be added to the three that we have now. They should take it in alright because they are the same age. Cross your fingers for me!
Thanks again everyone, your advice was appreciated.
