Chick Starter and Grower.

Trying to get ready for my chicks. Went to the farm supply store to get feed for them, and all they have is starter and grower feed as in a combination that is mixed together. On the bag it said that is is good for day old chicks to 16 week old chicks. The question is do I have to give them grit with this or can they digest it by them selves.

Well ususlly if it is mixed with chick starter it already has grit in it.

They can digest it themselves. I still give sand from outside from what will be their run as grit to help get their systems started the way nature intended, but you don't absolutely have to give them grit unless they eat something other than the starter grower. I always wonder what happens if a hard-shelled bug wanders into their brooder???

This also introduces any cocci that might be in the run to their systems so they can start getting the immunity they need, but you do have to keep their brooder from having a lot of wet poop in it and watch for signs of cocci.
