Chick starter substitute?

What did the babies eat before starter was cooked up? I want to try and make my own that is healthy yet feasible on a tight budget.

There is no way you can meet the nutritional needs of your birds with a home made feed as cost efficiently as you can by buying a prepared mix. The most important thing is to be sure it's fresh. 6 weeks after mill date, the nutrients are starting to break down.
