I have a chick who was shipped to me with pasty butt. She is 1 week old, and I have had her for 6 days now. There was a pasty blockage, but I cleaned it and opened the vent area straight away. She continued to strain when pooping, barely anything would come out (small diameter). She also cries out when she poops and she strains, every single time. I clean her butt 2x per day with water and wipe it off sometimes in between.

I gave electrolytes and probiotics (sav-a-chick) asap when they arrived from the PO. She also had gro gel day 1. She has had organic ACV water, lacto bacillus water, & plain water available to her for the last 5 days. Currently, she has both regular water and ACV water.

Her poop initially was runny because she would only take water the first 2-ish days. She did start eating small bits of starter crumble that I would crush for her. Yesterday she didn't poop any starter feed at all though, so I made sure she ate some crushed oatmeal. Today, I made a mixture of cornmeal, ground up oatmeal, and ground up starter feed, and watched her eat it. Oh, she has also had nutri-drench vitamins by beak daily, and grit is available.

The area around her vent is protruding slightly. I have seen prolapse in hens, where it comes all the way out - this is not like that, it's the internal area that is protruding. I am concerned that she strained too hard and is damaged internally? I have placed preparation H on and in the vent. I have also used neosporin and olive oil to keep the area below the vent unsoiled. Her navel scab is still hanging on and gets soiled as well.

Is there anything else I can do? What about her crying when she poops? Is she injured internally? Does she have a prolapse?

I couldnt get the camera to focus on her butt very well. it looks wet cause of the oil/neosporin.

Today she has taken a turn for the worse. I found her on her back under the ecoglow brooder unable to flip over? Too weak? It was strange. She is very very lethargic and weak. I got her to take a little honey water and nutridrench from a dropper. I saw her eat a tiny, tiny amount of the ground up oatmeal/cornmeal/starter I made.

she literally looks like she could die any second. I dont understand why?!!??
her vent is clear. I have diligently kept it very clean. Could she be backed up internally? I found her butt pasted with white poop this morning. I wonder if not all the poop is coming out? or something? I wish I knew what else to do but it doesnt look good for this little one..

if she is somehow backed up internally, how can you fix that??
could she still make white poops if she is internally plugged?

she hasnt pooped today, I inserted a very small object into her vent with AB ointment and I could not feel anything "plugging" the vent at least in the immediate 2mm entrance area. I didnt insert it very far, I didnt want to hurt her.. I put some castor oil in the vent too just thinking it could loosen something up... if it is plugged..

Mix some Karo syrup with water.it should be the color of tea.give her a few drops.i have read this works like a laxative.i am sure someone with more knowledge can help you.

Good luck!

I might be late for this reply but it might help some one in future. I have 2 day old chick whose vent was swallowed while trying to do poop. I red the article from jennyshobyfarm.com site it works for me. give one table spoon in 4 cups of water to the bird.it worked for my 2 days old chick. he haven't done the poop but he is getting goof
