One of the chicks that hatched yesterday (in the bator), is still stuck to the piece of eggshell that they're connected to. I can't see real well in there except to see that there's just a big blob there. The chick just laid most all day yesterday but toward last evening as she got stronger she kept trying to get up but she can't seem to get up with that back there. She's still trying today. She seems strong. Is there something I should try?

I heard that happens when the humidity isn't high enough....the eggs dry out and stick to the chick. You could try GENTLY peeling away the shell......let us know how the little guy does!

I'd try to wipe the shell away after soaking the area with a cloth dipped in warm water. Then put the chick back into the 'bator 'till it dries.

You might try to lightly mist some warm water around where the shell is stuck and gently massage around it;the shell should loosen up and the membrane beneath it should hopefully just roll right off.
I hope this helps.

I would put a piece of papertowel wetted with warm water on the shelled area, you can crack the rest of the shell off, but dont pull the stuck part of you may wind up with a Bald Chick, I know Bald is Beautiful, but not on a chick.

An update: I pulled the chick out and put a wet rag on her rump but I really don't think I would've needed it. The shell pulled right off! I'm not sure why she wasn't able to stand with it on or why it was not coming off on it's own because it didn't seem tight at all but anyway, I thought something was wrong with her leg at first but after all that time laying on her side, her equilibrium was just really off. I put her back in the bator on her feet and she gradually got stronger. After a couple hours, I put her in a box beside her sis's/bros and put one of them in with her for a friend. She seemed much happier then and continued to improve. I think it was the next day, we moved her in with all the others and she is now a very happy, healthy chick!!

Thanks for the help!

I have had that happen several times. ONe was so stuck I had to get it wet with warm water to get it out of the bottom part of the shell. It had fought so hard that I guess it just didn't recover from all the stress and died anyway. This monring I had 2 hatach and 1 had just a piece stuck. It had pipped in the middle of the egg then started to zip its way around lengthwise. It stopped after about an inch and never tried again. When I got woke up from the other one raising cain after it got out and saw no progress I helped it out. I was afraid it was going to die too becaue it just laid there. When I got back up a few hours later it was doing fine. It's cord was wrapped and dried around its leg and was walking funny. I just thought it was still recovering but after I checked it out I found the courd and just cut it loose and trimmed it and it's now fine. already pecking at food.

I take a makeup sponge and gently dampen the area inside of the shell and then carefully chip away the parts with a small pair of tweezers...a little at a time...and gently..never pull it off...go slow
