Chick temperaments

For all you seasoned chick raisers: Does a chick's temperament indicate it's future temperament? Can you "tame" a wily baby?

Of the four chicks I am raising right now, one is REALLY into being handled and loved on, two are comfortable with it, and one is really squirrely. The last one peeps really loudly, non-stop, and seems distressed the whole time she is being handled/held. Since I'm expecting a bigger shipment of chicks in a couple of weeks and can only keep some, so I want to choose the most docile (and female!) birds. The unhappy baby is a barred rock, if that matters.

Sounds normal to me..I have now been thru 3 sets of chicks since December

Mine all go nuts when I hold them..lmao, but I keep doing it

I have a 2 month roo now..no doubt roo and as much as I handle he is mean..infact,today put mu hand in and charged and pecked my hand..I grabbed him up and carried him around for 20 minutes

I don't like him..lol, he already scares the javezzies out of me

I do have a few out of all that seem friendlier..so iam now narrowing down what to keep

My silkies are actually the most squirmy and not friendly

2/6 Cochins are pretty nice and 1/2 seremas is nice

But most all freak when I pick them up. Some calm down and some just yell their heads off

So From my experience your experience is totally normal

You can't blame them for their yelling ..lol, they want to be back with their flock

Some jump on my legg, some won't come near me

I never had much luck taming those but also never tried very hard. For roos, sometimes the squirrely ones will make the best roos. Not good to handle them a lot when young, anyway.
