I am hatching! One of the first has a red umbilical cord that has a chunk the size of a dried pea at the end. Is this his reproductive parts? He is bright and active climbing all over the eggs dragging it along. Bright eyed. He is a goer. Do I need to cull or keep and see if it reproduces? I am not as sentimental as most on this forum. I was raised on a ranch. I really don't want to raise a chicken that cannot reproduce. I like eggs and baby chicks, chickens who do their thing. However I don't want to cull needlessly.
Thanks much

I'm pretty sure this happens a lot and he is fine.just watch . There is some posts on here somewhere about this.

Thanks
He is still doing fine, I think he is a rooster, he wants to sit up on the eggs.

From what I have read it might be it didn't absorb all of the yolk. Just watch and it may fall off in a few hours.

I had one sort of like that and after a day the cord looked dry so I cut it in the middle. All is fine.

It is drying up and he is still very fine, I think it will be fine, sorry, just nervous

I had a chick hatch that a couple days after hatch still hadn't lost his umbilical cord. Since it was dry and the other chicks were pecking on it, I cut it a bit.

This is what it looked prior to cutting:

I just cut the cord part, and not too close to his body, just enough to stop him from dragging all the hatching gunk.
