Chick using siblings like a soccer ball....

Okay so this little barnyard bantam mix hatched at about 8pm last night. The egg next to it there pipped around 4:30pm yesterday. Until Peeper (temporary name given by my 6 year old) hatched we could see that egg rocking around. Since Peeper hatched that egg has gone pretty quiet. WE haven't heard any peeping... no rocking... nothing. I am being patient as required by having gone to work and won't be home till 6:30pm tonight.

But Peeper there has been pushing it all over the incubator.... could this have affected that egg?

If it hasn't done anything by the time I get home I am planning on trying my best to help as I will be at least giving peeper some food at that point.

*background you might need. I started lockdown Sunday evening. These are all bantam eggs started on April 23rd. There is a 3rd egg with no pip. The 2 eggs under my broody chicken haven't hatched. The water bottle is a heat sink since 3 eggs didn't seem to be enough to hold my incubator temperature steady. I also can't check humidity because I never put a gauge for that in the incubator.

Any progess? If the chick is dried out i would move it into the bator with a stuffed animal for company.

Not that I can see on my security camera and husband says no.

I'm stuck at work so I can't do anything for another 5 hours minimum... unless I sneak out early... which I might.

If the other egg is pipped do not open the incubator. You will most definitely shrink wrap the baby in the egg. I had 14 chicks in the incubator knocking around the two last eggs. One hatched just fine. The very last one I had to assist because humidity dropped on me for some reason so it got shrink wrapped. But all of the babies knocking the eggs around didn’t hurt them. Just try to make sure that the egg doesn’t roll over and lay facedown on the pip part. To keep the hatchling calm keep the room as dark as possible. If it’s dark it will not be nearly as active. If you want it to move to a different spot use your cellphone light and shine it were you want it. The chick will go to the light.

If this chick is experience shrink wrapping or being sticky... how long can they survive like that? like when I get home will it still have a chance or having been about 26 hours should I be expecting to bury this baby?

I usually intervene at 24 hours. If you have had humidity issues or your humidity was high the chick could be malpositioned. I have waited the 24 hours. Zipped for them and waited an hour. Removed the top and waited about 30 mins. Removed more shell and waited another 30 min. So in all it was well over 26 hours. I had to do that three times. All three babies are a month in a half old now. As long as it can breathe I think it should be ok. Can you see if any of the pipped area is starting to turn a dark yellowish brown?

Unforunately I'm still at my desk so can't really see much as the resolution on the camera I have set is low and last I saw none of the membrane was showing.

This was at 8 this morning just before I left my house. You can see the pip in line with the distributed by statement on the water bottle.

It should of lifted some of the pipped shell pieces off by now. When you get home and if it has still only pipped or even unzipped I’d check the membrane color. If it’s brown or yellowish brown I would bet it could be shrink wrapped. Here is a pic of one of my babies that ended up shrieked wrap. You can see the color on the membrane. This one was also malpositioned. It was feet over head and head over wing. With the second malposition it wasn’t able to fully zip. And because of the first one it couldn’t push out of the shell. That one was a full assist hatch all the way to the base of the egg shell.

so if it hasnt moved any of the pieces would you then open up the incubator and peel the pipped shell back and see what you see? Peeper rolled the egg again slightly, so my husband can't see the pipped area... *naughty baby*
