Exactly how much grit do you give?

I would ditch the feed. Go the the store you get it from and ASK questions about this. Get some medicated feed and DO NOT use the Chick grit. Go with Straight chick starter and change your water every day. Sounds like everything else is as good as it gets.

If this does not help, then it must be a disease.

If there is a chance this is ILT I would avoid feed stores to prevent spreading it to other peoples flocks.

Coughing blood is a symptom of ILT, although I'm not saying that's your chicks problem, and I hope it's not, I would be careful about the possibility of spreading a disease .

Excellent advice mountaintop. I would also suggest contacting your local state ag dept to have a bird necropsied. The tests can take quite some time to provide results, but at least it will be in the works, while you try to rule out other issues.

I know you said they're in a cage, but any chance they came in contact with rat poison or can a mouse get to their dishes, that might have eaten poison?

I agree with Jody, sounds like ILT to me. This was coming from the lungs, not vomiting.

My daughter did not feed them any seizure meds, those are out of her reach and are dispensed by Mom.

An aneurysm would account for the volume of blood and the speed form "healthy" to dead.

The feed is stored in the house, the feed smells fine, it is dry and it is the same bag we have been using since day one. I would think if it was bad feed that all of the birds would be showing symptoms. Am I right in that assumption?

The amount of chick grit has been very light and not every feeding. If they don't need it with the starter feed I will stop giving it to them.

I don't think it is ILT, the only bird that has coughed was the one vomiting blood. None of the live birds are gasping or rattling. None of the expired birds coughed, rattled or gasped. The expired birds except for the one I culled and the blooded one did not gasp that I know of.

My larger chicks were housed in the same room as the meaties but were in separate cages and separated by about 4 feet. The larger chicks appear healthy and happy and have had no signs of distress.

This is what is confusing me. Each of these birds are fine and then the decline in a hurry. It appears to me as some kind of system failure.

The birds I have nursed I know would have died quickly without any intervention.

Good luck. I will recommend that you avoid (for bio secure measures) that you wear different clothing off your property and on. (I've been reading up on stuff and it's scary) Also, keep in mind that even tho your grain appears clean and dry, it may not have been just prior to grinding the corn, its hard to look at the food issue when it feels like you need to defend yourself from looking dumb. I've felt that same way before too.
ILT is a terrible disease and it is marked by blood spatters at the height of the birds heads. Usually its from them shaking their heads to rid their mouths of blood.
Like I said, there is so many freaky things out there, sometimes I swear ignorance is bliss! Perty chickens. Now I don't put much past the illness' of the birds we have.
Still, if your other birds have not come up with any signs, I'd assume it was what I earlier believed.
Hope you find peace soon, if your bleeding bird is not dead, I would suggest you cull it. Good luck!
