I have a Pekin Bantam who has hatched a chick that isn't able to stand. It isn't splay legged because its legs are pointed forwards rather than out to the side so it seems to be sitting down. It isn't able to move under it's own steam. Has anyone here come across this? Is there anything I can do which will give it a fighting chance?

I'll take some pics.....

I had a faverolles chick hatch that was very large. It couldn't get up on its legs and was sitting on its behind with the legs pointing straight forwards. It was moving by using its legs as arms to drag itself around.

This IS splay legs, just a different variety. I used paper tape to tape the legs together and the next day the chick was able to stand. After three days I removed the tape, and while it was still a bit broad-legged when I removed the tape, it is absolutely fine now. Couldn't tell it apart from the others if I hadn't put a leg band on it.

Oh thanks. I'll give it a go.

I was gearing myself up to cull and trying to convince myself it was male anyway.

Thanks so much for the advice. Chickie is up and running around with the others today!

I have a similar situation, but my chick is 12 weeks old. Was fine, but 2 days ago I noticed it was laying down when other birds we up. Look it over and didn't see anything. Yesterday it was walking on hocks. Had good appetite though. Is this splay this late or am I looking at marek's?
