One of our 6 day old banty chicks has been having some eye problems. He has been perky and eats and drinks but his eye gets sealed shut. It gets sealed shut but is clean looking until you soak it. Once it is wet for awhile it gunks up and gets slimey. Once you soak and clean away the gunk it looks normal. We did loose 3 chicks but none them had any eye problems, just lethargic. Any ideas of what eye condition he may have or how to treat, I don't want to loose any more.

Evenin Gabby , I have the perfect solution i have passed on a couple times on here, i to had the same problem, just one eye sealed shut, add water instant gunk....At Wal-mart i got this stuff called Purablube-Ointment :::petrolatum Ophthalmic Ointment Sterile Ocular Lubricant....cost 2-3 dollars, in with the eye solutions, eye drops etc.....my chic had no "infection" just gunky eyeball, it helps keep the eye lubed and from sealing shut, after 3-4 days all better, others purchased it and they pmed me saying it worked great for them to....inexpensicve cure ...I don't like to give antibotics unless there is a true infection, Good Luck

Looks like I will make a trip to Walmart. The eye when sealed shut is so tight and clean looking (no crusties or gunk) that we thought at first he might not even have formed eye lids. Soak it with a warm cloth for a minute and instant slimey gunk. Clean it all up and the eye looks normal, no swelling or redness, by later in the day it is closed again.

Same thing my chic was doing Gabby, as previously said 3-4 days applying that Puralube Ointment, made big diffrence...funny you said about the eyelid, cus i thought the same thing, the gunkie eye when cleaned up looked much bigger than the other....weeks later, my little frizzle , pretty sure is a hen, is doing great ....Hope it helps your lil chic

PS , directions say rub over the eye, ok to get in the eye...that helps to keep moisture in the eye to prevent the gunk build up
