She’s a dark brahma and is 6 days old today. I noticed the vent yesterday when I was dealing with pasty butt. I cleaned it, put preparation h ( no numbing or anything ) and pushed it back in but it popped back out. I did the same thing today ( she still had some pasty butt, but not as bad as yesterday ) and when I pushed it back in, it seemed to stay in longer before coming back out. My question is: is there anything else I can do or is what I’m doing all I can do? Also, what would this mean when she gets to laying age? Would she end up prolapsing again when trying to lay?

Im attaching a picture of her vent.

Did you hatch this chick or buy it?
Do you have a thermometer in the brooder?
I bought the chick and, no, I don’t have a thermometer in the brooder. I haven’t because I use heating plates for them instead of a heat lamp. I didn’t think a thermometer would work with one of those.

What heat plate are you using and is the brooder indoors or outdoors?

I have two producer’s pride heating plates but it’s switched to the heater option ( 40w vs 200w ) since the brooder is outside. I’ve had chicks previously using this set up and never had any issue. I did pick them up at the hatchery, but it was still a 3 and a half hour drive home.

well, it’s already looking a little better than it did Saturday, so I’m a little hopeful. This is also the response the hatchery gave, so I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic, continuing what I’m doing and hoping for the best.

How is your chick doing now? We are having the same problem with one of our 6 day old chicks.
She’s fine considering. She still has the prolapse, but there doesn’t seem to be as much swelling. I’m able to push it back in and she’ll keep it there for a little bit, but she’ll eventually push it back out. I’ve named her Preppy after preparation h, lol. I’m applying it everyday, but around what age her vent will start going back in was never specified. Preppy will be 2 weeks old tomorrow.

Thanks, I have been looking through threads and didn't see any answers as to how long it takes either. We didn't have any Preparation H, but do have cortisone cream which was also recommended by several people so we are trying that. Hope Preppy heals quickly!
