So, I had a chick stuck in its shell on Day 21 (tuesday). On Day 23 (yesterday) I helped it out, and maybe I waited too long because he has a ton of problems!! He has wry neck (his head flops to the side completely as if he's still in the shell), a curled up foot that also is straddled, and at first it seemed like his stomach wasn't healed, which is why I didn't take him out of the incubator until today (it showed signs of crusting/healing finally). When I took him out he could not turn himself over and was clearly very straddled and could not control his motions.
I'm getting vitamins soon, and for now his legs are hobbled together with a rubber band. But he keeps flopping forward completely, and the legs just stick out straight behind him. Otherwise he's always on his back and can't sit up without help. I have him propped up inside a curled up sock (so the sock looks like a donut). I've been giving him some water with a Q-tip, and a little while ago while his head was hanging upside down out of the sock he seemed interested in pecking a little at the shavings I have in the brooder.
When I look at the legs with the hobble on, it seems to go at a diagonal slant. Does this mean the hobble isn't putting his feet close enough together? Will this chick even have a chance?! I'm going to try to mash up some chick started and maybe wet it.. I put a chick shoe on but it got kicked off, so I'll attempt to put another one on tonight. I feel like unless I can get his neck upright, he doesn't have a chance to balance himself.
