I have a chick with an obvious broken leg..... she is about a week old. Found it outside the nest cold and brought it in and warmed it up. It survived and I saw that it had a deformity but didn't know exactly what happened. Now I can see exposed bone in it's leg. I looked up culling and I don't know if that is an option.......just dont think I can do it.

I'm anxious to hear what is recommended. I have a three week old chick that appears to have a broken leg. It is not showing signs of stress but it does sleep a lot between eating and drinking and it has a hard time getting around. Some of the roosters in the batch of six do occasionally pick on the injured bird, but they bully everyone so it doesn't seem to be just because the bird is injured.

Thanks for any help.

If you are trying to save chick, you need to put a antibiotic ointment on wound (nothing ending in "caine" ie: lidocaine, toxic to chickens) bandage wound and splint if broken, you can use popsicle sticks for splints, just make sure there is no sharp or pointed ends. Other than going to a vet, this about all you can try. Keep chick separate, quiet and warm, vitamins or electrolytes may be needed. Make sure she is eating and drinking. I'm guessing splint should be kept on for at least 2 weeks possible longer. You will have to check on this wound and re-splint daily.

i would like to save chick but not sure break can be healed. completely separated. bones exposed end to end. She is eating and drinking fine. Just unsure what is best for her.
