Chick with beak injury. Picture.

Just hatched out two chicks on Wednesday. One is really sweet and mellow and the other is a pecking tyrant. She started by pecking the others beak until it bleed. I used "stop pick" which helped but them she just started pecking everything else. When I got up this morning, the other had pecked her toe and it was bleeding everywhere. They are now separated to give the injured guy a chance to heal. I took some photos this morning and the beak looks worse than I thought. Any suggestions?

What a cutie!! I'd put Neosporin on the raw areas to start with. That's crazy that one is already a pecker!

I'd do what you're doing..separate until healed. Can you separate the one that is doing the pecking as well? Put the healed one back in first then the one that pecks. Just thoughts....

Thanks for the reply. Will use polysporin to speed healing of beak and toe.
Sadly, there are only two chicks. We received 22 hatching eggs in the mail but of all back luck, the day and a half they were in the post were our coldest days this winter (-20 celcius), so I'm hardly surprised only 5 developed and only 2 hatched. I should say, they pipped and started to zip and stopped. After 12 hours I decided to retrieve them from their shells to which they were totally stuck. They both had severe foot and leg problems which I corrected with pipe cleaner. The "pecker" was almost dead but is clearly a fighter because she's feisty and mean now!
I think they both had some major developmental problems. The "peckee", along with her injuries, has a wonky wing and I've just noticed an air bubble under the skin of the "pecker" (just above the right shoulder on it's it neck).

How sad!!! Could you at least put up a piece of screen between the two? That way they're "together" but not. Little "peckee" is going to have to toughen up! Best wishes.

Yes. I'll do that tomorrow-put up a screen between them-and put them back in the same brooder. They've been chirping incessantly since I separated them this morning. Though, for the first 5 hours each of them just slept; the peckee relieved for a break and the pecker, well, with nothing left to peck...
