I have a chick that hatched Saturday and on Monday I noticed it was holding up one foot, his right one, and would stand with it off to the side a bit more than the other. First I thought splay leg but everything I saw about that said they wouldn't be able to walk with that. His leg was slightly red and warm omonday I washed his legs thinking maybe he poked himself with an egg shell in the incubator. Yesterday it was back to normal color and cool but still stands funny and it seems 2 of his toes, just the tips where the claw would be, are black. Hes still eating and drinking and acting normal but peeps a lot more than the rest, a lot more! I can't see that it's pain as he let's me touch them and doesn't show pain. They are in the house so didn't get frost bite or anything. Does anyone have any tips?

Are you brooding them outside in the coop with a heat lamp, or inside where it is warm? It could be an injury to the tips, or possible frostbite. Did you hatch them or were they shipped chicks?

We had a case her last year of shipped chicks where one suffered frostbite to it’s toes in shipping. The person immediately had them inside her house under a heat lamp when they came home, and the frostbite was not discovered for several days.

Hopefully, it is just an injury.

They are kept in the house and were hatched from our own eggs. No chance of getting frostbite in our basement!
I will get a picture of his feet when I get home and see if that helps come up with a cause/course of action.

Best I could get trying to hold a squirmy chick and take a picture! Hope you can see it well enough!

Just love those squirmy little chicks. Good photo!

I agree with @coach723 that it looks like injury. Hopefully as she heals her stance will improve. She may stand a little funny right now if it's sore.
