CHICK WITH BROKEN LEG NEEDS HELP ASAP......................

I came out one morning to find my 4 month dominequer chick rooster with a broken leg/knee. He seems to be getting around fine and eating. He seems to be in no pain but he looks so bad. He sleeps with all my other chicks in a dog house they have not started to roost yet. I dont know what to do and I would really appreciate if someone could help me. I dont know what could of happen.

You may not want to hear this, but the best thing for it would probably be to cull it. Chickens pick on the weaker ones and it will always have a hard time from now on if you let him live. His quality of life will probably not be good even if he makes it. I'm sorry this happened.

Well it is hard to do, but if you can't do it, maybe someone you know could. It truly would be best for the bird if he does have broken legs.

Are you sure it's broken or just dislocated? If it's broken there is really not much you can do aside from bringing the bird to the vet to see if they can do anything for you. Chickens bones are hollow so that makes it pretty hard to fix. Good luck...I hope someone else can help you out.

One of my chickens broke her leg about 2 months ago. I used a syringe casing ( a large one), cut it in half, padded it with elastic-on to use as a splint. I used white tape to keep it on her leg - lightly wrap the leg with white tape, then around the splint a couple times. It worked amazing!!! I changed it every 4-5 days. She hardly knew it was on and the other girls left her alone except if there was a loose piece of string hanging. It takes about 4 weeks for the bone to heel completely. You would never know which one had the broken leg now.

I love the syringe idea.

I also think you could try something. Maybe they won't pick on him if he is getting around ok, but treating it seems important. If you see he is getting picked on, can you separate him while he recuperating?

I am just not a cull immediately type of person, especially if you have the time and inclination to help him.....

There is no reason to cull if you have the time and are willing to take care of him. He may need to be separated...any maybe not. The syringe idea is great...maybe cover it with vetwrap. Immobilizing the joint is the most important thing. I would give him Poly-vi-sol...one drop everyday...to help boost healing. Good luck and keep us posted!
