I have a 3 day old chick with a broken leg. The bone is visible and broken through the skin. Is there anything I can do for it?? She was born under a broody, all I can figure is she fell of the ramp. I brought her inside since she can't keep up with mama or siblings, but is there anything I can do for her? Ay advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

NO former experience here. I would say make some sort of splint/cast type thing. I would find a solid piece of some thing to keep the leg straight. Then making sure the bones are aligned( can't imagine how this would feel). Put that thing against it and then wrap it up in gauze/wrap of some sort. The other option is to find the hatchet and just cull it( that's what I would do ).

Treat the wound, clean and apply antibiotic ointment(nothing ending in "caine"toxic to chickens). You will have to treat this wound couple times a day, watch for infection. Align the bones, wrap with gauze or whatever you have on hand, splint with popsicle stick or wooden match stick(striker end removed)wrap sticks to leg. Be very careful not to wrap too tight, don't want to cut off circulation. Leave splinted for approx. 2 weeks remove splint and see how she does. Give her something like Sav-A-Chick or similar product(needs electrolytes and vitamins). Keep her separated, inside house with a heat lamp. Make sure she is eating/drinking,add warm water to her feed(make a mash). She is going to be lonely, maybe give her a stuffed animal,i would suggest bringing in another chick, but am concerned that she may get pecked or bumped. If she seems really stressed,i would try another chick with her.

Thank you. I was ready to cull, but my mother decided she wanted to try and take it to save. Passed along the treatment advice, so hopefully it will recover. There were only two chicks that hatched out of 6 eggs, should I remove the other chick from mama so it isn't alone? Or will it be fine staying with the hen? My mother put the injured chick in with a lame pullet she has that isn't walking right now, maybe that way they can keep each other company without getting injured.

We've had two hens with broken legs. We just separated them from the rest of the flock for the leg to heal then introduced them back into the flock. They may limp around but they're still happy :)

Leave chick with mom, otherwise chick and mom will be stressed.

I like to hear stories like this. So many times chickens are culled because of broken legs, when in fact they often heal . Chickens may have a limp, but they are still happy and enjoy doing their thing.
