We purchased some day old chicks this week and two had been pecked by other chicks and had their eyes closed. The first chicks eyes opened within a day as we were told would happen but after 4 days the second chick still had her eyes closed we had tried a warm damp cloth but that did not help. This morning we tool a drop of castor oil on a q-tip and wiped both eyes with it. Put her back with out other chicks and within 5 minutes both eyes were wide open. Not sure if anyone has used this method but it definitely worked for us. Quite happy to see our little girl pecking and drinking on her own with her eyes wide open.

Will mineral oil work? I have two four-day old chicks that aren’t opening their eyes, even when startled. I’ve been wiping them with a warm washcloth, and that works long enough for them to run to the waterer and feeder. But the next time I check on them, they are closed again. It seems like they go to sleep and can’t open them when they wake up. There is no visible crust, lumps, or discharge.
