I posted this in the emergencies/diseases/ injuries and cures section but I havent got any response yet. I figured I might get more responses in this section.

I was watching my 7 week olds today when I noticed one had crooked toes. I never noticed before. Here is a picture....

We got her from TSC's Chick Days. She has always been the smallest and she isnt that mobile. She basically lays down all the time although she is a bit more active now then she was when we first got her but she still isnt as active as the others. What is this? Will she be ok? Is there anything I can do for her? Should I seperate her from the rest? Thanks.

mother o' chicks72 :

can it walk ok? the boots or chick shoes will not work on a 7 week old.

In the thread I retrieved that picture from, they did it on a 2 month old... same principle... you just have to use stronger tape... Like the useful and infallible duct tape!

There are a few things that can cause the crooked toes. It can be genetic, or the floor of the brooder is/was too cold, temperature during incubation was incorrect or humidity too low, or it can be caused from raising them on wire floors. Usually if you catch it early, you can do the "splint" or "shoe". If the chicken can get to water and food, then she should she be ok. I would be aware though, as she and the remaining flock grows older that she will be destined to be on the bottom of the pecking order. This can lead to her being picked on and not allowed to drink or eat. This is not a definite, just a possibility.

Try doing a "splint" or "shoe" and see if it corrects the problem. If it does not, then be prepared to give her her own space.
