I rescued a two day old orphan chick from a flock that had signs of leg and face mites, several of the birds had gone blind from the whole of their faces being consumed by the parasites - or so it appeared. The flock was treated with Ivomec in the drinking water after individual dusting with DE had no effect. The birds seem to have stabilized. The flock is not mine. I pulled the chick two weeks ago and treated with Ivomec - 1 drop at nape of neck. Last week I noticed a dark crusty lesion at the side of it's mouth. I treated again with the Ivomec, this time putting the drop under the wing directly on the skin. In this past week the sores have overtaken the face and now I am thinking it might be pox and not face mite at all. The bird dusts regularly, is very spry, eats well and is active. Do the photos look like face mite or pox? What is the best care for the bird? Thanks so much.

If it's dry pox put white shoe polish on till it clears these are not mites.

Looks like your chick has Fowl Pox.
Apply Iodine to the scabs to help dry them up. Don't disturb the scabs. Check inside the beak for any lesions/plaques, this would indicate that it is Wet Form which is harder to treat.
Keep your water stations cleaned and sanitized.

For the lesions closest to the eyes you can apply Terramycin eye ointment or similar ophthalmic ointment.

Good info Wyorp Rock, you can also treat with gentian violet

Don't use de!!!!!
It killed one of my birds.
chickens have sensitive respiratory systems and any dust can give them issues!

Use permethrin its at tractor supply and kills the bugs instantly its a liquid and has no respiratory effects of the bird.

I have found that de just moves the bugs while permethrin kills them.
