One of my 3-week old chicks has outside toes that curl backward. They were ok when she arrived but started to twist as she grew.

I used some vet-wrap to tape her outside toes to her middle toes in the hope of getting them to straighten out. How long do you think I should leave them taped before checking progress? I don’t want to traumatize her too much.

My suggestion would be to cut a little piece of cardboard, put it beneath her foot and splay her toes into a relatively normal position, and then wrap the whole thing in tape. Like little duck feet. Leave the boot on for about two days, then check on it and see what happens. If they stay normal, then you're likely done. If they are still curled, you can put it back on for a day and repeat the process. It shouldn't take longer than three to five days.

As for the traumatization, they should get used to it within an hour or two. Trust me, they'll thank you when they can walk normally. :)

Thank you both! The vet wrap has been on for two days now. I’ll take a look and see how her toes are doing and go from there.

I took off the vet wrap and her tors are definitely straighter and more forward. The nail end is still twisted but I’m not sure I can splint that very well. If her nails grow out instead of down I’ll just have to trim them for her. Unless you have a fix for that?
Anyway I’m glad I took a shot at it. Thanks for your help with it!
She’s still named Curly Sue though 😄
