First time with baby chicks. Purchased 3, 3day old chicks from 1 feed store and a few days later purchased 1 more from another feed store. I am using pine shavings, cardboard box, change water several x's a day, litter daily. They were treated last Thursday at the vet for tapeworms. They were given injections. The chirping and good energy have declined from that day on. I have one chick who is the largest and growing faster than the rest who began wheezing through nose and the chirp sounds strange and low. It has started flicking it's head. There are no signs of drainage from eyes or nose. The sound is worse when lying down and breathing seems more labored. The chick seems to act normal other wise. Should I separate the chick or is it to late for that? I am wondering if this sounds like Newcastle, not all the symptoms seem to be there. The symptoms come and go. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

new castle is not likely from a reputable source. CRD is common everywhere I give my chicks to prevent this...LS 50 at a rate of 1/2 teaspoon per gallon. it's expensive about $30.00 for a small bottle but it goes along way and is cheaper than a vet of treating a flock later on. If you can't find much at your feed store for CRD google Jeffers.com they have a large selection and a section for only poultry, their prices are also really good., but you have to wait to have it shipped.
The possible reason 1 is growing faster than the others is probally just the breed. A cornish can grow to eating size in 8 or 10 weeks. While a laying hen can take as many months to reach laying age. Feed stores sell chicks to sell feed. Hatcheries sell chicks according to breed to suit the buyer.
Seperate your sick chick in a different room if possible because many dieseas are air borne. You probally have time to find what you need especially if there is no foul odor or nasal discharge, but do act quickly.

Thanks for the advice. Is the antibiotic something that can cure this problem or does it simply help prevent it? I am taking them all to the vet this evening since I am not sure. Thank you!
