Hi there. I have a chick under a week old who went off feed/water two days ago. I began giving her an electrolyte/probiotic mix with a little yolk through a dropper several times a day and she is perking up. HOWEVER - I have since noticed one eye is badly swollen and she will not open it. She kept them both closed most of the day yesterday while resting but it’s clear today there is some type of injury. I am worried infection may set up if she’s been pecked or something. She has been removed to her own area with a very docile sibling..and we use red lights.

How can I help her? Saline? Terrimycin? I have neopolydex from my pup with a chronic eye problem, but I’m uncertain if those medications are safe for poultry. Please advise if you can. Thank you!

Hopefully this helps.

General care for eyes is to clean/flush with saline, remove any dirt/debris/pus, then apply an eye ointment like Terramycin. BUT if you have Neo Poly Dex, you can use that, just a dot of ointment is all that's needed.

Good eye, open and closed.

Thank you for this. I tried just a dab of the Neopolydex. Hoping it helps! She is eating and drinking on her own now at least. I have hope. ❤️

How long before I should see improvement? I have been rinsing and applying actual terramycin (rather than the Neopolydex) twice daily but I am not seeing a great improvement. She is eating/drinking in her own exceptionally well but I’m concerned as the swelling is much more significant than the first day. I can post more pics. There does not appear to be any discharge or crustiness. Nasal passageways clear. Do I just need to give it time? Is twice a day enough for rinsing? I really appreciate your help!
