Hi all

I’ve got 4 , 8 week old silkie chicks. Touch wood all had been healthy 5 days ago I let them out in the “big” run and free range supervised. 3 days ago I noticed one was puffed up and bit lethargic by the morning she was puffed up refusing to eat, vets gave me antibiotics. However the next day another one seemed unwell although not as bad but they started to poo wjth blood I’ve had it tested it’s got high cocci and my vet has given me medicine to put in the water.

The problem is the little one who was really poorly won’t touch the water, I tried to syringe in some of the medicated water and it came straight back up. I’m absolutely petrified of her aspirating so I’ve left her alone.

I don’t know what to do for the best if she won’t drink I can’t cure the coccidiosis, I don’t know if she’s got the sour crop because of the coccidiosis but her crop is so big now there is liquid coming out.

I’ve given her a tiny bit of liquid pariffin but I really don’t think she’s going to survive. Is there anything else I should be doing and in her case what’s more important treating the cocci or the sour crop? Should o stop the antibiotics too as I’m worried this can be making the sour crop worse ?

Thanks

You should be able to give the coccidiosis treatment undiluted as a drench, which would get a decent dose into her in just a tiny amount of fluid. How much you give will depend on the strength of the medicine and how much she weighs.

Corid deplates nutrients which does not combine well with a chicken that already isn't doing well from another issue. I would continue the corid treatment and for the chick that isn't doing too well, give a little poultry cell or nutridrench as a boost.

In regards to the sour crop treatment, I'll attach two articles I would read regarding sour crop and their treatments.

Any supplements containing thiamine (aka vitamin B1) should be avoided until they've finished the course of Corid. Giving them at the same time will make the Corid less effective.

I'm not sure offhand if other coccidiostats all work the same way, if they've been given something other than Corid (amprolium).

Is her crop emptying overnight?
Does she have access to Grit (insoluble, flint, granite)?

What did the vet give you for treating Coccidiosis? You mention liquid Pariffin for the crop, so I assume you are not in the U.S.

What antibiotic?

You want to treat both, often a crop issue is related to another condition. Coccidiosis if severe will greatly affect the intestines, so that is related to the crop.

With you in time crunch, it may be best to call the vet and ask for more information and see if it's possible to give a direct oral dose of the Coccidiostat.
