So sorry for your loss. If you see anything like this again, I would send the body for a necropsy and testing by the state vet. Do you have any other chickens older than the new chicks? The pictures of the legs had swelling that looked like swollen joints, similar to MS, a bacterial infection of the joints. Because of the spots on the bumps, and the bumps on the face, it seemed more like fowl pox, but hard to know for sure.
These are our only chickens at this time.
I now have a chick who shows a vitamin b12 deficiency, with toes curling under. I had started adding vitamins to the water the other day though (it has b12 in it).
Everyone got scrambled eggs with paprika in them dusted with a multi vitamin I usually give my tortoise that has a variety trace minerals. Figured it may have something they are needing.
I may have a possible culprit for the feet spots. My daughter catches lizards alot and noticed that they sometimes have what looks like orange sand on them. This is some kind of mite I assume. Well as I was typing the first paragraph of this, she came up to me and showed me that she has one stuck on her chest! It is a tiny thing, like a fine grain piece of sand. Perhaps these mites were tracked into the brooder house in the dirt on our shoes and the bites caused a secondary infection/ reaction. The entire yard is now in the process of being sprayed.
Does this sound possible?
