Chick with tear under vent- **Update**

Yes, Darling, we think alike!!

I'm going to take it to the vet in the morning. I'm certain if they can, they will help, and if not, it will be better off with the vet euthanizing it than me...I can, but it's only with sobbing and drama.

I hope it makes it to morning!

I feel like there may be more going on, since there is no tail, but what if there weren't? Then I'd have a rocking rumpless Black Copper Marans! I hope the baby makes it- it's my fave, of course...

OK, here are pics:

This is before washing again- it get a substantial buildup every couple of hours, and it' still wet, not crusty.

This is after carefully running it under warm water, and gently blotting with a Q-tip. You can see the raw area is not connected to the cute pink, healthy pucker above it.

The last 2 images are still uploading to the server from my camera, but I knew what the URLs would be, so give them a minute...

And just think - that's a good looking baby! Stout, wide, looks wonderful. I really hope he makes it. I can see what's going on and it's just not pretty is it?

Will you please update when you can? He has such a cute tushy minus the problems there. Awwww darnit all.

Why do we have chickens again? Ohhh yeah, because they're wonderful.

I'll say a prayer and send good vibes and all that good stuff. Will be looking for your reply.

It IS a good looker!! And I have massive man-hands!

I will be springing it on my vets (can you believe I have 2 chicken vets who love these guys like we do? How lucky can a girl get?) at 8:00, before any regular appointments get there...they'll hate me after this.

I'll update!

Thanks, too, for your help. I really just felt pathetic for not being able to remove myself from it and cull it...but that's not who I am. I want to save the world, one chick at a time!

You are lucky! My vets are pretty awesome, but I can't say they love these guys like we do.

That's sweet.

You know, I'm the same as you. I've had to put animals to sleep before (usually more obvious - like when the geese were mauled). But something like this - honestly I wouldn't be able to do it either. I hate to admit that, but it's true. Not as long as they seem like they want to live.

My boyfriend tells me that I can't save them all. But if I can help save a couple... That's better than none, isn't it?

I'll be looking for updates. I mean it!

Well, Rumpy, as the kids have named it, appeared to have somehow gotten a bit of urates out of her vent overnight, as there was a spot of white in the middle of the pucker.

I've jusst washed her, so we'll see how it goes now...it may have just smudged up overnight.

She's still perky and eats a bit, drinks a bit. I gave her a bit of molasses water to keep things fluid. She doesn't seem to be too distressed, but is a big baby from being constantly wetted and whatnot. Poor thing!

I've put off taking her in to the vet- I lost my job in Jan and we really can't have another big expense- and anything is big at this point, but I have to do something...can't just ignore it. I'm waiting to see what happens post-rinsing: last night as I was taking pics, she passed a bit of poo. Not the right way, but a bit of green was more than she'd had pass since hatching! I want to see what happens here prior to taking her to the vet. Can she poo now that I've rinsed her?

So far, it doesn't look like anything is different. It's such a hard one!!! She doesn't seem to be uncomfy, short of acting like she's cold- more so than the one that's in there with her. I can also see clearly that she has a tear-shaped area that is devoid of and feathering, too. At first I thought it was membrane holding down fluff and possibly gluing her bum shut, but now I see that it's a different texture- and when I picked at it to take off the glued membrane the first day, it bled a tad, clearly NOT good. Talk about feeling bad!!

I've got to make a decision, though...I guess I'll wait it out one more day.

Oh poor little Tardy or Rumpy -

Thanks for keeping us updated. There's a lot of us pulling for him.

Try putting a folded wash cloth or sock in the brooder for the two of them.

When I had my three banties in their brooder, I put a tube sox folded over it's self and my little ones LOVED to cuddle on it.

I figured with just the three, they didn't have as much body heat as my ten standard chicks that piled on top of each other.

Get well little guy.

LOL Rumpy. Maybe if you encourage the vent opening to be more open, that will help. I'd definitely use a little olive oil on the opening, a q-tip, open it a bit now that there's a spot there. The path of least resistance is where the poop will go and it needs to come out. That might stretch the tissues there. Honestly as it's oily you could just use a little neosporin on a q-tip. It'll act like petroleum oil would (as that's its base) and then treat any little fissures that happen as the vent expands. I definitely think it's worth a shot!
She probably will have a bald spot there. I had that happen with a duckling that I found who hatched with some issues and had a raw spot. She didn't get anything until she grew adult feathers. And that always happens when the membrane glues to their body. It seems to kill off the fuzz (though I know that's not what happens), and fuzz - unlike feathers - doesn't grow back. It's a one time thing.

I really do think I'd put neosporin on a qtip and try to widen her vent opening.
