144 chicks arrived today from a hatchery and one chick has a wing injury. The wing hangs down and the end of it where the pin feathers are growing out is bright red, like there's blood under the skin. What can I do to help it?
The wing could be broken or bruised. Most people recommend wrapping the wing in a natural position against the body if it is broken. I don't have experience with broken wings, but here is a good source for splinting the wing with a figure 8 bandage on pages 11-14 of this link: http://theiwrc.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Duerr_Splinting_Manual_2010.pdf
I think it may actually be bruised. It seems to have blood under the skin. I tried wrapping with gauze all different ways it each time the chick would flop over. Then I noticed that it's now draining a clear liquid. I sprayed Blue Kote on it and put her back in with the chicks.
