Our flock keeps expanding... and expanding.... and expanding.... I wonder why that is? lol

Anyway, I have a thing for beautiful roosters. However, many times, more than one rooster in one coop doesn't work out very well when there are hens involved. My solution? Chicken apartments! This way, I can have essentially one structure, but divided to keep the peace. This way I can have a rooster, and a few ladies in each one. Not to mention, these would be great for breeding purposes! I want to build (well, have my husband build rather) basically one long house, with walls inside dividing each "apartment." On the front, one large run, with wire dividing each apartment "yard."

I'm thinking a structure that is 2ft off the ground (to give the chickens extra room underneath the house)

4 ft tall (for a total of 6 ft tall) then 3ft deep by 16ft wide. Then divide the structure into 4 "apartments." So that would leave us with apartments that are 4x3x4.

The yard I was thinking 6ft tall, 16ft wide, and 6ft deep. Then divided into 4ft sections in front of each apartment.

Would that work? Is that big enough for 1 rooster and 2-3 hens for each apartment? Is there an issue with having pens RIGHT next to each other? Should we put some tin or wood dividers at the very bottom between each yard so that the chickens can't SEE each other?

I suppose you could have separate run/coop areas for separated flocks. I prefer one flock in which all the birds can interact and live together. Typically you want about 1 rooster to ever 7 or 8 hens. Some people don't have any roos at all. I have a couple roosters around to watch the flock and sound the alarm when they free range. If you have more that one roo then one will become the Alpha bird.

Plymoth Rock roo to the right watching over his girls.
