Hi, my 6 month old hen recently swallowed a 1/2 inch wide, 4 inch circumference rubber band whole(I know the size from an identical one). She’s acting normally right now, and I’ve heard about a lot of a chickens surviving this, but I’m worried because it’s such a wide rubber band. I’m going to check if her gullet emptys overnight tomorrow morning. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Are you providing chicken granite grit for her age? That is about all can do to watch her and make sure that she is eating. Some things they swallow may be broken down by the gizzard, and may never be seen in droppings. Hopefully, she will be fine.

No, I didn’t realize they should be provided with grit and don’t have any... She’s free range, so she has access to lots of little pieces of gravel from the driveway and whatever else she finds. Would it be suitable to gather some small pieces of gravel and put it in a dish so she knows it’s there?

Ok I found and cleaned some teeny tiny pieces of gravel and put them out. The chickens seem interested in it. Thanks!
