One of my young chickens (not a chick), about 3-4 months old, ate my earring. We have given her olive oil. We are concerned this will make her sick if she cannot digest the metal. Will it come out eventually??? What should we do??

It should come out. I'd isolate her and remove all feed for 24 hours.
This way her crop empties and the earing can go through her system.

Chickens eat a lot of strange stuff. As long as the stud isn't sharp she
should be fine.

Oh my!

and what a strange way to start!

How big is the earring? If it's a small stud it will probably pass. Just don't feed her, put her in an isolation cage for a couple days and watch her.

Let us know how it goes.

I saw a lady on the Johnny Carson show years ago who worked on a poultry farm. She brought in an assortment of things that the turkeys had in their gizzards (after their demise and the subsequent gizzard cleaning) and I distinctly remember a spark plug. Your chicken should be fine, but it may take a while to pass.

The stone on the earring was about the size of a dime. It is some synthetic/manmade pearl type stone. The clasp was the kind that open and close, I was worried, because when I tried to grab it from her mouth I didn't know if it was open or closed...worried it will get hooked on something. It is not sharp, and if closed, quite smooth...but if opened I will be worried.

my mother told me a story once that my gradmothers chicken snatched a pearl earing right out of my mothers ear and my grandmother pushed it back up her crop and back out of her mouth. I could imagine a person possibly being able to do this because you can usually feel what they have eaten in their crop. The well being of the chicken though im not sure of. Sounds like it may be rough for the chicken but again not sure. Good luck!!!

Help!
My neighbor's 4 - 5 week old chick ate my pearl stud earring.

What do I do?

The chick that ate the earring is in a brooder now, with its sister.

Any suggestions?

I have two, apx 13 month old chickens, adopted from friends moving. I don’t have experience with chickens.

The intention is to join the chick and chickens into one back yard flock.

thank you,
Barbiee
