Chicken Ate Part of Plastic Bag

My wife was too late to stop it: my six year old daughter was out in the back yard eating a sandwich wrapped in plastic wrap. She tore the plastic off, and dropped it on the ground right near the grazing chickens. The way she tore the plastic, it was in several pieces.


Before I could stop him, our fourteen week old cockerel grabbed the largest piece of this plastic wrap -- about 4 inches by 4 inches, I guess, and ate it. I mean, he just sucked it into his beak and ate it.


What will happen to him? Will this kill him? Cause his crop to become infected?


Or will it just get ground up in his crop and gizzard and eventually pass out of him?


Is there something I can do to help him?

Oooohhh. I haven't dealt with this before, but maybe you can give him some bread soaked in oil to help?

That is usually what is useful to treat impacted crop and may be helpful for him before it becomes a problem...if it even does. The oil would help coat his insides to make it move more smoothly.

The bread and oil is about all you can do. One of my hens ate a piece of broken glass and I did the bread and oil thing. She had what seemed like digestive troubles for months - I think the glass may have cut her insides - but is finally doing good.

I gave my chickens a bowl full of whole wheat bread soaked in olive oil this morning.


BabyRoo ate more of that food than any of the other chickens, which I am glad of.


He did not look sickly, and he's still doing his best to get out a proper sounding cock-a-doodle-doooooo.... (He still sounds more like a foghorn than an adult rooster, but he sounded like a foghorn BEFORE he ate the plastic).



So I guess that right now, all looks good.
