So, my niece brought her dog over and he went after my Black Star. I think he thought she was a toy because he grabbed her and just started running around the yard.
She ended up with some pretty bad injuries. Feathers/skin gone under her wing (about 5x5" wound) and also 4 puncture marks. 2 on the exposed injury and 2 on the other side. I did not see blood. We cleaned her up, put antibiotic cream on her, bandages and loose wrap.
The next day we repeated that as well as using the Red and Blue dye spray. She is limping pretty badly (extent comes and goes) on the injury side but I can't seem to find any obvious break??
She's been inside since this happened (Wednesday). We're giving her her regular food, meal worms and sometimes a little cottage cheese.
She doesn't seem in pain aside from the limp and yesterday we took off her bandages. It looks pretty good but obviously dry.
She laid an egg on Thursday  and every day since. She's pretty active considering her bum leg. She's eating, drinking, pooing and "talking" all day and is quiet at night.

So....my question is..... When would you put her back outside? I realize that she'd be picked on so we would not have her with them, it would be made that she's in the area (20x30 metal shed with huge fenced in outdoor area) but protected. It's been in the 60s-70s this past week and decent today and tomorrow but then we're down in the 40s, 30s. I love her but I can't have her in the house ALL WINTER LONG 😣💩 but I also know I can't just bring her out after it gets cold because it's too much of a temperature drop. So that's first advice question.

Second is her leg. No swelling from "elbow" down and I can't see anything above. Could it be something that will heal with time? If it was a broken upper leg, I'd assume that she'd be dead by now from blood poisoning and could she even walk if it was broken? You'd think she wouldn't be able to walk or would squeak out in pain.
I just hope we're not delaying the obvious.

Thanks for reading my book and I appreciate any advice you can give me :)

If she doesn’t put weight on it in a couple of days it’s broken and if you can cover her enclosure with plastic and put a heat lamp in it she should be alright.

Where are you located. Just the state or country is fine. You can go back to your profile and put that in and it will appear on your posts. Helps us help.

I would put her back out ASAP. Maybe in a dog crate for awhile. Chickens are social but they forget their flock mates easily. I tend to think of it this way. What would your chicken do in the wild. I had a chicken who hurt her leg and foot badly. She couldn't walk for about a week. Put her in and old small TSC so she could get food and water without being pushed away. This was in August. Small coop is inside big run but not predator proof. So I locked her and the others in the coop at night for awhile she slept on the floor under roosts. Then she was able to get up on the bottom roost. At first I was worried about her jumping down in the morning. But at about 2 weeks post injury I let her do as she pleased on the roost. At 2 weeks she was still limping pretty bad but she was back with the flock

Now you wouldn't know she was injured. Except if you look close you can see a couple of bumps up near her leg feathers . Chickens are tough. If she's eating, drinking and pooping and able to get to the food I'd let her back in with the flock. If not as I said keep her in a small dog cage with food and water. Let Mother Nature help you out. She and your chicken will work it out. Good luck

She put weight on it instantly. I know she was in shock because she didn't limp at that time. She started limping the next day. So so you figure that she does NOT have a break? Thanks for the advice!

You'd put her WITH them? She still has a large open wound and I don't want them to peck her to death. That's my main concern. She was top dog before this happened.

It may just be bruised and strained, and time will be the healer. It's not uncommon.
I will attach a manual that tells how to examine for fractures, for future reference, it does not sound to me like a break, more like bruising or a sprain.
As long as she's eating, drinking, and not at risk of getting attacked by others, I would put her back outside. If the wound is open, then I would keep her in until it's healed enough to not need treatment or be a risk of being opened again. I would keep it covered with plain neosporin or plain triple antibiotic ointment until then. Pictures of wounds and injuries are usually very helpful in giving advice.

Thank you for posting that :)
Here is a picture of her injury. I've read so many things, cover it, let it breath, put triple ointment on it, use BLU-KOTE...so I did a mix of all of them.
Do you think they'll attack her? She was top dog. Her wing covers her injury.
