Looking for thougts: today one of my rhode island reds, one of my 8 free rangers, was picked up by what my kids and their friends believe was a hawk. They saw her drop and take off, but when we went searching for her she was nowhere to be found. We thought she was gone. Then, several hours later, after we went about our day, she miracuously was back with thr flock. She was walking and eating seemingly normal. As i got closer, i noticed her eye was swollen. Eventually she let me pick her up, and only the one spot looked like shed been hurt. I cleaned the area with saline but am not sure if I should be doing anything else. Again, she seems fine, eating and drinking and walking. We know if she gets weaker, what would do her in would be the other chickens. Do you think shell be okay? Should i treat this any other way? Thank you for your thoughts, were so happy she is home.

Blue kote over the wound to help kerp out infection and avoid pecking injury. Antibiotic ointment over the eye incase there is an injury there as well. Check her overt really well the hawks will dig their claws in, they take then straight up then drop the prey to kill it. Either something scared the hawk or the chicken managed to run after being dropped. That's why it didn't go back for its kill

You may have an attack chicken that beat the crap out of the hawk and the hawk ran off leaving the chicken alone.
I have had chickens that have gotten in fights that they ended up like this and antibiotic ointment worked fine.

OMG, thats awful. I'm new to chickens so can't help but I hope she gets well soon.
She’s doing fine, thanks for your wishes! She was out with the rest of the flock again this morning. We got really lucky ❤️

We had no idea we needed to worry about hawks. And obviously I has no idea this was how they killed. Thank you for the information, she is doing great today.

Are attack chickens a real thing ?

Glad she's doing good. I had one try to take my dog once. It realized the dog was heavery then he looked when the hawn couldn't get more then 5 feet off the ground

I have had two chickens get in a brutal fight and one of the chickens both of it's eyes swelled up and closed but after a couple of days his eyes were opened again with no harm. I don't know if the hawk could have injured the eye itself that could be a problem but the chicken should be fine the worst is it ends up being blind in that one eye or an infection so just make sure to put antibiotic on the eye. I Would say if it was only the eye she would be okay but keep an eye on her just in case and make sure none of the other chickens are pecking at her.
