I dont think they're jumping the fence looking for food, my chickens (and my dogs) most days eat better than I do. I think they just get bored in the run because they are used to being in the yard. I work at a college so I had the summer off. The chickens are only 7 months old and their whole lives they've been able to run the yard most of the day. I only put them in the run when the dogs are in the yard. The only time I kept them in the run for an entire day was when hurricane Irene was coming through. They seem to be creatures of habit, and I didnt do the same thing that I normally do which threw them off. Two of mine go up in the tree, but they come down when I call them so I've not had a problem with that. I just need them to stay inside my fence because there are coyotes and dogs and other chicken eating animals outside. If clipping their wings will keep them from flying over the 6 foot fence, that works for me.
