My mother has 4 chickens. 2 Anconas and 1 brown leghorn were bought at the same age. A few weeks later, she got a very young ameraucana chick. At first, the Anconas picked at the young chick quite a bit. Then they seemed to settle down once we got them all in a new large run. About a month went by in chicken bliss. Just recently however, the chick has started to look very ragged, with clear bald spots and cropped feathers all over. We suspect that it is being pecked again, but we dont ever witness anything. I would have thought the pecking order has been established by now. Besides it's appearance, the ameraucana seems to be getting on fine. They all range and roost together and seem to be happy. The run and coop are more than adequate plus they get to free range. The chick is about 2 months old now and the others are between 3 and 4 months. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. My mom doesn;t want to separate them because the chick goes crazy when separated. She has a soft spot for the chick though and just wants her chickens to be happy. Any help would be great. Thanks!
