Need some more chicken advice. My big broody cochin was apparently bitten by the snake that stole the golf balls. I found her in her nest, minus her golf balls about 30 minutes after we killed the snake. Rat snake, so not venomous. Her eye is completely swollen and has scabbed over. I have her in the hospital cage and she' been on antibiotics. I have Tylan on order at work. I can get penicillin, Baytril, cephalexin, pretty much anything. She has duramycin in her water right now. Is there something better? I'm doing warm compresses two or three times a day. Is there anything else I can do? I tried to get the scab off to see if it would drain, but no luck. She was a little pinker today. She's eating and drinking fine. Her poops are either watery or very small, straw size. I don't want to cull her if I don't have to. I can live with a one eyed chicken. She's a good girl. I put my little frizzle bantam in with her for company since The Frizz is once again healing from an over zealous teenage roo. She seemed happier and they snuggled up and took a nap.

I dont recommend duramycin for this type of injury. Duramycin is kinda geared more to treat respiratory diseases. Non venomous snakes carry alot of bacteria in their mouths, so when they bite something, the bacteria are transmitted into the wound. I believe this is what you're seeing. I recommend using Penicillin G Procaine instead of duramycin. As far as administering Penicillin G Procaine, here's a link, post #2. Scroll down to "ANTIBIOTICS' and "USING PENICILLIN G PROCAINE FOR POULTRY."
