Chicken Breed Focus - Jersey Giant

hi guys i am curious as compared to a smaller breed, how much more space do JG 's need?
Depends on if you're talking about hatchery or breed standard birds. Hatchery birds need approximately 4 to 5 sq ft per bird in the coop and about 12 sq ft of run. Breed standard birds are much larger, and therefore, take up even more space.

This past Sunday one of my JG hens went broody. Has a small clutch under her. Question is, this late in the season would it be wise to let her try? I am in North Texas and we generally don't get a hard freeze till almost November.

Thoughts?

I'd say yes. That would give them a solid three months before the weather turns cold. They'd be well into their adult feathers and they will snuggle. I think you'd be okay.

I would think that fall chicks would be more natural in a hot place like Texas than in cold areas up north.

Is it possible that this is a jersey Giant? It’s my friendliest and largest chick. What other breed could it be? Is it too hard to tell at this stage (3 weeks)? 9DB5E22B-8919-4F76-92A6-06E06A4682A0.jpeg

I have 2 JG teenagers and they have been super, they get along with all my others very well, they even try to mother my little ones when they are around. I checked on everyone last night and one of them had her wings around all the others

Hatchery sourced Giants do not come close to being the size of Giants bred to the breed standard. The chicks may grow a bit larger, but the white skin of the Australorp is dominant. That would be a big problem if you want to breed according to the breed standard. If you just want a flock of big, black chickens, then the Australorps are a good choice.
I was curious about that. I keep reading BJG's lay huge eggs and get massive, mine are larger than my other chickens but no where near being 'huge'. That's what I got them for, wanted a giant chicken.
