I agree. We DON'T really have a winter to speak of but it gets unbearably hot and humid in Southeast Texas. Beings the malines have downy feathers,I'm wondering if it would be too hot for them.

Yeah, that's pretty hot down there. I've heard they don't do too well with extreme heat. I'm thinking there might be ways you could improvise a cooling system for them. A misting sprayer on a timer during the day - a fan at night in the coop. It'll be more work to keep them comfortable in your environment. :/

When they said Turkey head i was thinking naked neck. Hmmm. Think im fixing to order some barred hollands.

Oh yeah, the turkey head variety of Malines. Would probably be a better bird to raise in northern climates. Someone in Canada has them - I just don't know who! This greatly perplexes me.

Shellz, darn I hate when your right! Dratted Turkey head. But that doesn't explain the fat dispursement in the malines. Had to be another game bird involved in its creation and I'm sure I read about it somewhere!

S'alright! I've been wrong before too. Just not lately. Well, you better get looking into the why of fat disbursement then! This was something that always intrigued me as well. I'm surprised you actually found something about it that explains it. Certainly its not just lots of downy feathering, or orpingtons would have similar meat qualities. Do your orps have marbled thigh meat, Our Roost?

Whites & other color varieties are unheard of here. A good breeder & show-er of Malines, by the name of Nathan Saegart in Belgium, breeds all the colors. Someone want to try for an import? Too expensive & complicated for me. Hubby would divorce me for sure!

By way of example, here's the worst cockerel I've ever managed to hatched. I'm sure he'll be delicious later.

He's as dark as his pullet sisters, leg feathering isn't so great & yellow traits that look like they're going to stay.

It's fantastic to see that some people here want to work with this breed. I am not a "real" breader, I just love my tiny Barbus. They are pets like my cats and they have no other purpose. Okay.... they lay eggs, if they feel like it and from time to time I have chicken soup from the surplus roosters. But know matter what I do in my backyard, it will not change the chicken world.
But I admire people who get into the dual purpose breeds and try to bring back quality. Some organic farmers here try to finde new ways with old breeds, b/c they are fed up with Aviagen. But fighting "The Dark Empire" is only possible b/c chicken enthusiasts have preserved and cared for old breeds. So disscusions like this do make me very happy.
Just some lose thoughts: .... maybe you will finde a way to import new blood lines.... maybe sperm imports are easier and cheeper to do...and I don't know if the american breeders club has something like a Scientific Poultry Yard, but if they have an Institute maybe they can help with the tec stuff and the paper work.

Well said. I really think this is one breed worth preserving & new bloodlines arrived last year.

Everyone has their favourite(s), I understand. We should raise whatever makes us happy.
