mornin all! We are expanding our happy flock with 12 more come spring. We currently have RIR's and red- leghorn mixes. We know we want more RIR cause they the best layers and we sell our eggs but we want to try a new breed. Anyone have any suggestions? We are personable with our chicks. We are hoping to find a breed that lays an unusual colors egg but has good production rates if that exists. We realize we will probably have to order online to get the breed we choose but have never ordered them. Any suggestions of good places to order?

Easter Eggers are your best bet. You can find them at feed supply stores as day olds. They'll be labeled as americauna or amauracana or some variation to this. But they will be Easter Eggers. They are not a "breed" but a cross of different breeds that lay mostly green to blue eggs. They can lay well just depending on the hen. Sometimes you'll get one that lays brown or white or cream. I did. But I think that's rare. Most people with EEs love them.

We housesat for someone with easter edgers but she rarely got eggs but I don't know if that was cause of the breed. My husband already frowns upon them cause of production. Was trying to talk him into those before that. I was checking out Maran I beleive their called but getting mixed reviews on production rates which is most important to my husband I do love that chocolate red egg though and hear they are friendly

We have 4 hens in an urban setting... I was hesitant to get an Easter Egger bc of their production rate. But our little easter Egger lays me an egg every.single.day.... bless her! And the blue/green is always a favorite when we share our eggs. Out of our birds, she is the quietest & most friendly. I am thinking of adding few more.

Another pretty egg layer is a Maran- dark, coppery eggs!
