i just heard of idealpoultry.com. Has anyone else ordered from them. I got rid of my flock last year. I’m in the process of building a bigger coop. I never mail ordered chicks before and someone told me I needed to get a import permit in Connecticut. I emailed the department of agriculture but probably won’t get a reply until Tuesday. I could understand a permit for out of the country poultry.

I don't believe you need to get a permit to have chicks delivered from a hatchery. There may be bans in certain vND areas, but that is a different issue.
I have heard of Ideal but have not ordered from them. I am in NY and I chose to work with Meyer Hatchery out of Polk Ohio as they are closer to me than Ideal out of Cameron TX.
I have my order in place for my chicks to be shipped late April when the weather is better. I had zero losses last year when I had chicks shipped mid-spring.

I'm not raising RIRs this time. Were I live I cannot have chickens but across town were my mom lives can have chickens. She told me that seeings how she will see the chickens every day she wants to pick them out. So i handed her a chicken book and told her to highlight what she wants. She picked out BARRED PLYMOUTH ROCKS, SILVER LACED COCHINS and BLACK AUSTRALORPS. So I said whatever you want.

i have ordered from ideal 2-3 times. i was getting "fancy" breeds. some were not so great, one was not purebred, usual amt of deaths. VERY nice folks and easy to deal with...the last hatchery i used was strombergs. i try to go with whoever is closest to be honest. i did like strombergs a lot. i think distance huge factor, also time factor...too cold? too hot? i would never order bantams mail order again, they are just too fragile. in summary, its a crap shoot! i think strombergs closer to you?

Hi, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

I have ordered from ideal... not perfect birds regarding the standard of perfection... but equally as healthy as those from My Pet Chicken.

Yes, some doa... my route is tough on chicks. I have YET to receive shipped chicks with 100% survival rate. But after hatching hundreds of my own... it's interesting to see that even chicks who hatch and fluff up all on their own, sometimes don't survive even though they weren't shipped but you can't tell it's going to happen right away. They look perfect on the outside until their yolk is gone and they are trying to eat and digest on their own. What I mean to say is that hatching has given me a better understanding of what the hatcheries face and just how intricate and delicate life is.

My local feed store won't let their chicks go for several days after arrival as they don't want their customers taking home chicks that still may pass. They make sure to absorb the chick loss (and get reimbursed). It's a good way to go if the deceased or dying chicks are going to bother you or your kids.

I liked Meyer's birds best from the few hatcheries I have used. Do you guys have feed stores? They may have them available for local pick up.

From hatchery, bantam survival has been low to none. From breeders, my bantam survival is about 50%. Large fowl is higher.

Most hatcheries are NPIP certified.. and THAT IS the requirement for them to import/export across state lines in the US.. out of country requirement are much more. But every state in the US does have rules and it varies state to state... but NPIP on the shippers part should be good enough for Connecticut or anywhere in the US barring vND quarantine zones!

Sounds like your mom will get a nice variety of eye candy! :)

i was going to order from mypetchicken.com because they are right here in Ct but shipping cost is $47 and chickens are $62.50. I would go pick them up but according to the website they do not have a store so pick up is unavailable.

I believe MPC has no store pickup available because "their" chicks come from Meyer Hatchery. You'd be better off ordering direct from Meyer.
