Chicken buyers beware !

A few months old but...prices are different depending on the area and breed plus SQ vs PQ, etc. Non fancy breeds at POL or young layers around me go for $10 sometimes $15. Tell someone $30 for a BO or RIR here and you'll be keeping that golden chicken!;-) Never agree to buy until you check out the chickens first- just ask/say you'll come take a look. Never hand over the money first-especially if you want to choose for yourself. Good poultry keepers will show you which ones are for sale. Some folks that do practice biosecurity/are NPIP certified really don't want every person that shows up touching their birds until they feel that the sale is a go. Check out the birds in the flock, ask to see/handle the ones you pick. This is the time to check for injuries not seen within the flock and for mites etc. I agree that driving all that way may make you feel obligated to buy but if the seller is overly pushy and don't have time for your questions? Spend your money on a nice meal before heading home! I too had trouble finding what I wanted in the beginning. Drove an hour to find the seller's home, first thing we see is a stark naked chicken running away! Looked like it almost got in the pot b4 realizing what was happening. Lady had about 30 or more chicks/chickens in a 4'x5' shack that I thought was a dilapidated structure! One glance at the mud and filth and I had to remind my children ( all under 10 at the time) NOT to say anything. The lady dropped her price all the way to $2 each. I told her thanks for her time and left. My kids were asking questions about the #s, looks, health, the naked chicken...and said they wouldn't have given fifty cents for any of them because she'd just get more to be treated like that! Even if you have an empty transport box in hand DON'T FEEL OBLIGATED to buy if things aren't right. I hope OP has since found what they were looking for and some good resources.
