Hello, I have a barred rock hen, just a little over a year old. We have 19 hens and 1 young rooster, not “roostering” yet, if you know what I mean. 2 days ago we found a hen laying in the run on her side. We thought she broken her back or legs but when I picked her up she looked normal. I could move her legs with no pain and she was “fine”. If I put her down she goes right back to falling on her side. We put her in the brooder box by herself. She drank and ate right away. I put electrolytes in the water. I thought maybe she was bullied and kept away from the water and or food and she got dehydrated. The next day she was kicking her legs when picked up. A friend came over and check to see if she was egg bound. She had some hard poop in her vent and was missing feathers around it. She felt no egg. After removal some watery poop came out. Later that night I soaked her for 10 mins in epson salt and warm water. After 10 mins she was fighting to stay in. A little more watery poop came out. Now this morning there was a big firm poop in the box. More feathers are missing under the tail but redness and swelling are down. She did get pecked some while laying in the run but I think she is missing more. There aren’t feathers in the box with her and I don’t think she can even get to her vent area the way she is. I’m keeping food and water right by her head and flipping her serval times a day. She is lifting her head more and when you pick her up she kicks and fights you now. No poop since the big firm one. No other hens are affected. We feed them regular layer feed and day old bread, scrap lunch meat from the bulk store near us and whatever scraps we have. She was fine the morning all this started. Does anyone have any answers?

Sorry about your hen. It sounds like she was injured in her back or bullied by another chicken, although Mareks disease or something else could be a problem. Is the young cockerel afraid of the hens, or is he running around at all trying to mate. I would consider making a chicken sling chair. She could spend periods in the sling if she tolerates it, to eat and drink and be upright. Then you can take her out to sleep or rest and stretch. Place a small food and water container right in front of it. I would start some human vitamin B complex 1/4 tablet daily crushed into a small bit of food, and consider vitamin E 400 IU daily. I would stop the bread to prevent crop problems, and feed her mainly the chicken feed and a little scrambled egg some. Here is a link for chicken slings, and look at posts 5, 11, and 12 for examples:
