This chicken got caught in an automatic feeder a few months ago... She seemed fine other than the fact she stays by herself mostly; doesn't go far when I let them all out... She walked fine and seemed normal. After this happened I noticed poop always stuck in her back feathers; I just let her be till my rooster and another hen had feathers missing. I thought maybe they had lice so I caught her to look for lice; i got the hose and washed off her butt and discovered this... Never heard that a hen may not be able to lay an egg!!! She has this black looking infection under her vent. I am not too familiar with a chickens anatomy... So can someone give me some advice please I can't believe that this chicken is not dead as this happened mid Feb. Maybe the egg is just something new that has happened more recent. After I got these 5 hens I noticed an egg about the size of a marble... Either her first egg or something.. It only had the white in it no yolk.
Today I put oil on her and massaged her; it does feel like an egg is in her!
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Well, I am not sure what to do about the infection, You will have to wait until someone else posts. But I CAN tell you how to get that egg out.

You have to pour warm olive oil into her vent, then GENTLY try to manuver the egg out. Then give her a spoonful of castor oil. BE CAREFUL. DON"T BE TOO HARD ON HER.

Thanks TweetyNPetey I'm assuming from the outside? I am new to this..! Just massaging it? I tried today a little to get my finger in her vent but was scared I would hurt her.. I'm thinking about getting her off the roost tonight and do this again then putting her in a nest..? With maybe a warm washcloth in a ziplock under the cedar shavings? Not sure I already put oil on her and massaged around her rear earlier today... She was put foraging this afternoon. She has the will to live..

Hi…our little Leghorn Bantam was egg-bound today. We poured warmed olive oil with a little water into her vent. (My husband held her on her back). I was "gloved-up" and I gently inserted my finger into her vent. I moved my finger around, very gently, not to hurt her. It felt like the egg was attached and not loose at all. We let her loose and about a minute later, she laid the egg. It was very large and soft. So, don't be afraid to do this. Just be very gentle and let the chicken do the rest. I hope this helps! We are not experts! We are actually "city" professionals who decided to raise a few chickens (Bantams and Silkies). So, this is all new to us. Good luck and God bless!
