I need some kind of catching net. One chicken got out yesterday and i was chasing it with a stick to move it along towards the run door. It was a problem that most likely will happen again but all i see is fishing nets to buy. I dont want to catch them by the leg with that hook type thing. Any advice?

I agree, first step is to train them to come to you. Usually you can just reach out and grab the one you want.

You can also keep an eye on them until night and catch them. My boyfriend and I tag team it and have a "herding stick" we use and herd the chicken into a corner and catch it. Or, you can use a taller fence so they can't get out. Or fix whatever issue it was that allowed the chicken to get out.

IMO it's much easier to train them to come to you or tolerate herding by you, than to chase them down with a net. Something to consider if you have the time and inclination for it. Mine will come with a rattle of a treat canister or return to the run with a vocal cue and bit of herding with a stick. Even if a chicken darts out of the run it makes it easy as pie to get them to voluntarily return.

My chickens will run to me if I have any fruit in my hands- raspberry and blackberries make them come the second they even think I have one ! Try treats !

It would be a wonderful world if all our chickens were friendly and came with treat training...we use a chicken funnel for all the chicks who are still wary of us or want to fight bedtime.

We have a part of our yard that we've strategically placed obstacles that force them into a funnel and then we grab 'em. Best of luck!

I agree. Treat training sounds great in theory and seems to work well for a lot of folks with their chickens, but apparently it doesn't work for all chickens. My 3 golden comets don't seem interested in treats. I've tried many of the tried and true things. Scratch and bread crumbs work the best, but even those aren't enough to motivate them to come when I call and rattle the canister. I'll keep trying, though!
