Chicken & Cats?

I was just about to post a similar question about cats. We came home this afternoon to find one of the pullets missing. I found a few feathers on the ground, but no other signs. My daughter crawled under the deck and found the poor thing dead. I don't want to be too graphic (and to tell the truth, I couldn't bring myself to look at the poor thing for more than a few seconds). I think the chicken's neck was broken and part of her underneath was missing. She was a beautiful Gold Laced Wyndotte that belonged to my son.

We think it was a feral cat that roams around in the backyard and wood-sy part of the property. We saw him sitting at the top of the driveway when we pulled in. It was late afternoon, so I don't think raccoon or fox. The run doesn't have a roof, so a cat could climb or jump up the four-foot fence. Any thoughts? Do you think it was the cat? The chickens are young (we only just put them outside fulltime on Sunday night. They are almost six weeks old, so fully feathered, but not so big.

In retrospect, we probably shouldn't have left them alone outside while we were gone, but it was a beautiful day and we weren't gone that long. (Please be kind and don't tell me how stupid it was to leave them outside when they are so young. I feel bad enough as it is. I still have to tell my son (who had to go out again as soon as we got home...) what happened and that makes me feel even worse.

Another question I have is do you think the other chicken will be okay living alone for a few weeks. I don't mean safe from predators, I mean will she be lonely. The rest of the chicks are still in the brooder and won't be ready to move outside for about two weeks. I thought maybe it might work to put the two-week old chicks in the coop and only let them outside into the run when we can supervise. They don't need the heat lamp and the temperture at night has consistantly been 50' or higher.

This is our first time raising chickens and everything was going so well. I feel like I really failed....

Thanks for reading.

I have 4 cats and have never had any trouble. They want nothing to do with the hens and the rooster Watch Out! I would bring your little girl in if you can. The world can be a scary place for a little hen alone at night. But I'm as mush. DON'T blame yourself!!! I've have chickens for 9 yrs. and still have accidents Lost 6 bantys to a falcon in march. It happens.

My cat adapted well to the girls once they were several weeks old. peeping chicks are just too tantalizing for any predator, but older pullets and hens seem to hold their own.

I have a suspicion that when my chickens were about 4 months old, the neighbor cat pounced on one of mine, took some feathers but was scratched up sufficiently so that he never returned.

Roosters are pretty effective against predators like cats also.

Keltara you have a beautiful kitty! I have 3 cats and they have not bothered the chickens. Lol,I am sure our rooster would take care of them, but at the same time the girls are pretty quick to attack as well!

We have 9 cats that are indoor/outdoor who are avid hunters, and have 3 or 4 farm cats that come around. None of them have ever bothered the chickens for real. One of the younger cats likes to pounce when one gets too far from the flock when they free range, but has never
touched them and the rooster never seems concerned.

I think you could try intigrating the chicks with the lone hen as soon as they get a bit older, right now if they are only 2 weeks old they DO still need heat! 95 the first week 90 the second week mtapering off 5 degrees every week until they are weened off the heat. It could have been a feral cat in your situation but it could also have been a hawk or something else

I had a kitten who showed up one day in the pen, looked to be 4 or 5 weeks old. The chickens in the pen were only about 5 months old, so they did not bother her. For the longest, I could not get near her, I would got out and give the chickens scraps and she would eat out of the bowl with the chickens like she was one of them. At night she sleeps in the coop with them. She is know about 8 months old and lets me pick her up, she will not let anyone else hardly see her. But as for the chickens they treat her as one of there own. She eats her cat food now mostly, but own ocassion, depending on what the chickens are eating she may eat what they are having. I have not seen her around chicks yet, but I have a hen on the nest now so I she how she treats them.

Wonder how many laps a cat would make around the lot before the rooster, that was clamped down on it's tail would let go. Sounds like a neat science fair project if you had a cat silly enough to let a rooster that close, May want a radar gun to, new land speed record for a highly motivated cat
