That sounds like a hard dog for training. Is there anything that he really likes - like hotdogs. He only gets a piece of hotdog when he ignores the chickens.
Our Irish Setter ignored his shock collar whenever he wanted to do something that was really fun - like chase deer. He would get really excited to see it though, because my DH only put it on him when they went hunting, or training for hunting (finding birds). He was a real sweetheart of a dog and wouldn't hurt anything. Anything except pack-rats that is. He hated pack-rats with a passion.
