Hey to whoever is reading this! :frow
My name is Shianne, I am 27 years old & living in Central Georgia with my boyfriend, our 4 children, 3 dogs, & 4 cats! We are PATIENTLY (lol) waiting until we can become new chicken owners! We are going to build a coop, & attach a 10x10 kennel (with all the safety works, of course) for their run, as we don’t want to risk them getting hurt free ranging. Any & all advice is welcome, as well pics of your built coops FOR SURE! :celebrate I already know I’m going to love this site!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Brand spankin’! Our families own chickens- it’s our turn! Coming this Spring.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
0. We want… A BUNCH!

(3) What breeds do you have?
Again, 0. Looking to get Buff Orpingtons, Silkies, Rhode Island Reds, etc.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
“Ours.” I think it’s going to be awesome having the little cluckers! Caring for them as they provide us eggs & building trust/relationships with them is so eggciting.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I just picked up gardening as well! I believe chickens & gardens go hand in hand.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
4 children, 3 dogs, & 4 cats sounds like a lot to be adding chickens to, but we are so ready!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
A friend I worked with has chickens, I call her the chicken queen because I quizzed her straight out of a chicken book, random questions, and she answered every one correctly! Lol anywho, she told me about the BYC group on Facebook which I joined, and eventually led me to finding the actual website. We are very set on getting chickens and trying to get ideas on coops, so I couldn’t think of a better time to join and get started!!

Welcome to BYC! If you want a bunch of chickens, with a 100sq ft run, the general recommendation is 10ft^2 per chicken in the run, and 4ft^2 in the coop, so you’d be maxed out at ~10.
Thank you! & thank you for that info, it is mostly to just get started with some. I’ve heard about “chicken math” so I can only assume there will be more added. Lol. Do you think we should add more 10x10s the more we get? Also, was thinking about ordering from Tractor Supply online, most come in groups of 10- should we start with one breed? Or do a mixed group? Definitely leaning towards Buff Orpington's as they are docile & kid friendly. TIA!

Buff orpingtons aren’t my cup of tea, but that’s just personal preference. Get whichever you want. I’d personally go for a mix, but again, personal reference. But do be aware, if you go the silkie route, you will have to get them straight run unless you buy them as adults.

In general most breeds will be kid-friendly, I would only worry about that if you plan on having a rooster. Bantam cochins, Orpingtons, Silkies, OEGBs, etc... Do tend to be the more cuddle driven if that is what you are looking for.

Not sure if you’re a dog person, but I feel as if the Buff’s are the Corgi of the chicken world. 😂😂 Super cute and chonky, but can also be weird. 🤨 I have SO much to learn.. but I’m ready!

I do like dogs. I’m just not a fan of the color buff. I’d rather have pretty much any other color of orpington. I don’t even like buffs when it comes to Ameraucanas or bantam cochins, which are my two favorite breeds. All comes down to personal preference though.
