Something is waking them up early. Perhaps lights of a vehicle or the footsteps of an animal outside the coop. I loved waking to the sound of neighborhood roosters rather than an alarm clock in Costa Rica - but when there was a middle of the night thunderstorm, they would start crowing at whatever time it was.My rooster crows just before dawn. My neighbors roosters begin crowing at about 3:30 a.m., non stop. any ideas why they would be doing this?
There's your sign!!!No, but he has a light pole in the yard that pretty much lights up the entire property.
all barred rocks
mine not making distress noises about anything in the sky. They make a quite "urrr" sound and either turn the heads watching it or run under the coop - depending how big or how close it is.
They make distress noises either when something really bad happening or some suspicious noise or visual that they can make up and freaking out - e.g. wind moving garbage bag. If I sit in a chair feeding them treats, than start moving my foot they would also freak out and start staring at it and clucking as well.
Where's the dislike button? I need my sleeeeeep! There's your sign!!!
Was thinking about this theory this morning as I cleaned the coop and a CCL pullet came into the coop and started sounding off, pacing the roosts and floor. Another pullet, already sitting in a nest when I entered coop, joined the chorus...they went on and on and on...Willie did not show up to escort them anywhere, he was outside eating scratch grains. Once I finished cleaning and left the coop, the CCL got into a nest and they both shut up.This is the answer to your first question.

It doesn't sound the same to a chicken.
They can tell the difference and so could you if you put the sound through a frequency analyzer.![]()
That could be because there is nowhere to escort them to in a closed run.Was thinking about this theory this morning as I cleaned the coop and a CCL pullet came into the coop and started sounding off, pacing the roosts and floor. I don't know why they say what they say....doesn't really matter...it does crack me up tho. Puts me in mind of the 'hen party' adage.![]()
Then why do they vocalize at all? That could be because there is nowhere to escort them to in a closed run.
It won't work for confined chickens aart. They know where everyone is!
I believe it's instinctive. Then why do they vocalize at all?
They were talking about laying eggs, no boys needed![]()
