Chicken Co op for the urban farmer $3500

It's clear that this coop was more of a design project than a functional coop and I'd surely never raise chickens in such a small enclosure but the rest of your (and some other people's) comments about those of us from NY/NJ are utter nonsense. I'm not a REAL person???

Anyone with chickens can easily see that dresser without drawers is not chicken appropriate. I understand that New Yorkers would like to "go green" like everyone else but, this all sort of defeats the purpose and is therefore rather perplexing to us onlookers.

A big part of the go green movement is conservation and a part of that is frugality. The sleek design of that thing is pretty cool but, it's obviously not meant to be a proper home for a chicken who poops every few minutes. It's meant to be the new age urban farmer's big impression. The wood bottom will not look that pretty in short time. Any shavings, dust, fecal matter will be splattered up against that glass and ruin that finish on the poo tray. And, I hope the designer is sending out proper care instructions for chickens. If anyone decides to place that housing outdoors, they will have some chicken popsicles come January and the owner could very well be slapped with an animal cruelty charge if that happened. And, it really wouldn't be their fault because one would think that by spending all that money on a chicken coop, that all the "T"s would be crossed.

My comments in which you took offense to were referring to the need that some people feel to "one up" the next. Either by the car they drive, the clothes they wear or the chicken coop they buy, they are making a statement to anyone else that witnesses it and I, personally, think it's rather foolish.

eta a little story;

A girlfriend of mine from high school joined the Marines. She traveled to Japan and Germany and all over the world. She retired from the Marines early and pursued a nice career in San Diego. Within a few months, she started sounding different. After a year, she started talking about breast implants and a nose job and other surgeries. I remained open and we talked about her options. She did a lot of research and found a fantastic doctor in CA. After the procedure, her clothes were more fitting. Her attitude was stronger. She began having problems in her marriage and she started on the nose job mission. Before she got a chance to do it, she moved back to the east coast as her husband was transferred. She started feeling really sick. Her hair fell out and she was having anxiety problems. She was diagnosed with .. I forget what it was but, it had to do with her body rejecting the foreign object in her breast tissue. She had them removed and life went back to normal. She still is.. as she always was beautiful.. but, now has a few scars she's not so proud of. She also has her husband and they are more in love than ever. After being back here for a couple of years, it has been a mighty long time since I heard her discuss any non-medical procedure.

I believe she was caught up in a culture that is just different than what we have in more rural areas. Those people may think we are backwoods hillbillies that don't know anything.. and that's fine. I am proud to be in a country where we are all free to believe what we wish. I am not saying you are not a "real" person. I am referring to those persons driven by a fad. They are not what I deem being "real."

.....one more thing. What would a hot summer sun do to chickens in a glass coop that have no access to a run?

no matter what fan you have.

They do have a summer acrylic option for another $400. It's cut out with some design to allow more ventilation. I do admit that I like the design style, even if it's not practical. I wouldn't buy it, but I will admit it's cool. I like the eurostyle. My current favorite well designed thing is at http://www.swissroombox.com/swissRoomBox-home.html, not that I could hope to afford that either, and I think it's more suited to european style camping.
